Special Learning Session with Anne Papillault and Jean-François Dars: Short Stories, Big Ideas

Saturday, November 21 and December 12, 1:00 PM - 3:00 PM
Cost:
$10, free for Scribe members
Instructor:
Anne Papillault and Jean-François Dars

Celebrated filmmakers Anne Papillault and Jean-François Dars teach participants how to make photographic short stories, using black and white still-images accompanied by a high-quality audio interview. Their “histoires courtes” or short story technique allows filmmakers to explore big ideas in science and politics, using a narrative photomontage approach. This special session introduces participants both to production tools (hardware and software) and production methodologies.

Interested participants should write a very brief description of an idea that they would like to explore through the “short story” technique.

Based in Paris, Jean-François Dars and Anne Papillault have been activist mediamakers since the 1960s. They worked closely with pioneering filmmaker Chris Marker and were part of SLON/Vidéo, the activist media collective created by Marker and Inger Servolin. Since the 1980s, they have been documentarians-in-residence for the French National Center for Scientific Research.
