Multimedia for the Web

Learn to how create a website for your project with easy-to-use and free online tools! This class is a survey of accessible Open Source tools and management systems for working with text, audio, images and video on the web. Students will understand how to build websites for diverse content needs. This workshop will guide participants through the steps of creating a blog and then look at the process of adding moving images to their sites. Come with ideas, text, images, digital video and prepare to experiment and create!
Re-presenting Stories: Oral History for Documentary Film and Beyond

Engaging in oral history, we retrieve historical information through interviews with individuals whose stories comprise the collective memory of our communities. This series of four workshops will present oral history methodology, explore possibilities for multimedia projects and discuss ethics, representation and dynamics of power in the relationship between interviewers and the community. (Valuable for Precious Places participants and everyone with ideas for new projects.)
Adobe PHOTOSHOP Working with Layers
DATES: Tuesdays, May 25 June 1, 8, 15 TIME: 7:00 – 9:00 PM; SPRING 2010
An overview of the use of layers, one of Photoshop’s most powerful features.
Understanding how to work with layers starts with understanding some basics about what layers are, what their capabilities are, what functions are in the layers palette, and how to locate all that you need to apply basic layer power. Emphasis will be placed on individual student projects both for photographic manipulation and graphics. Basic knowledge of Photoshop required.

Intro to HTML and Web Design
DATES: Mondays, May 3, 10, 17, 24 TIME: 7:00 – 9:00 PM; SPRING 2010
Learn concepts of basic web design and how to upload content using the FTP uplink process.
This workshop provides an introduction to creating a web site and provides instruction in HTML, the programming language used to create documents for display on the Internet. The workshop will also demonstrate some of the free tools and programs available to help you create your own website or blog. Bring texts, digital images and ideas and be prepared to experiment. Familiarity with PC or Apple computers is helpful.

The Good Story Intro to Scriptwriting
Dates: Mondays April 5,12,19,26, May 3, 10 Time: 7:00 - 9:00pm; SPRING 2010
This workshop is an introduction to the primary elements of story telling - passion for the idea, characters worth meeting, a message with meaning – as they relate to screenwriting. The workshop is designed to explore your personal voice and encourage a regular writing practice. Participants will be expected to do weekly writing assignments and should have a story idea that they are working on.
Structure and Story: Intermediate Editing
DATES: Mondays, January 18, 25, February 2, 9 TIME: 7-9pm (FALL 2009-2010)
You’ve learned the basics of Final Cut Pro, now you must apply those skills to turn your raw footage into a compelling story. Designed for participants who have begun editing a project, this workshop explores the language of editing – the meaning of a shot, scene, transitions – and will help you develop a structure and form for your work. Participants must request a meeting with instructor prior to registering. There will be some review of the functions of Final Cut Pro, but basic proficiency is assumed.

Streaming Media for the Web
Wednesdays, January 14, 21, 28, February 4 TIME: 7:00 – 9:00 PM
This workshop will introduce participants to new media concepts, processes and best practices for preparing, publishing and streaming media specifically destined for the web. Participants will be introduced to the applications, methods and tools for streaming media over the web including capturing, compressing and encoding tools, major streaming media formats and players, and multiple choices of free internet TV platforms and video channels (beyond YouTube) to host and distribute video.
