Poet Ursula Rucker is best known for her musical collaborations with The Roots, King Britt and 4Hero. Michael Dennis’ Ursula Rucker: Poet (2008, 30 min) is an intimate performance film, featuring appearances by Sonia Sanchez, Saul Williams and Gil Scott-Heron provides a glimpse into what makes her one of the most acclaimed artists of her generation.

Ephraim Asili creates a layered portrait of the current activities of the Sun Ra Arkestra in Points on a Space Age (2007, 33 min). The film’s layered combinations of text, performance footage, archival footage, and interviews mirrors the aesthetic of one the most famous avant-garde ensembles of all time. Also screening is Asili’s Movie Tote (2007, 8 min), an experimental video designed to generate dialogue around issues of race and privilege.

This screening is presented in collaboration with Mind: Media Independence.
