South Camden may not normally evoke images of verdant foliage and bountiful vegetable gardens. With an assortment of industries, an incinerator, a sewage treatment plant, and toxic areas including two federal Superfund sites, the neighborhood is severely affected by pollution. Respiratory and other health ailments are widespread, and neighborhood groups have decried the environmental racism that has rendered their very air a dire health hazard.

Queen Village Community Garden is one of Philadelphia’s oldest community gardens. Located on Christian Street in South Philadelphia since 1976, the garden is a vital green space set aside for the enjoyment of the ethnically diverse neighborhood. Since the garden's beginning, diversity among the membership has been consciously encouraged, and the garden quickly became a bridge between whites and blacks in the community. "Our goal was to bring together all the parts of the neighborhood," says Libby J. Goldstein, one of the garden's founders.

"I just love that place. It's a haven," a woman says with a joyous smile as the video opens. Featuring exuberant testamonials from HIV positive members of the We The People "family," this doumentary short lovingly documents a unique HIV and AIDS-themed social service agency located within shouting distance of City Hall. We The People, an organization run by and for people with HIV, has produced a moving video which documents the organization's efforts to emotionally, socially and economically empower people with the HIV-virus.

Filmmaker's Name:
Janet Williams, Cindy Wong
Filmmaker's Bio:

<"http://www.peoplewithaids.org">We the People Living with AIDS of the Delaware Valley is the only Philadelphia-based organization created and run by people living with HIV disease and AIDS. This organization serves as the major link to the larger medical and social services for the growing number of people with HIV/AIDS, many of whom are disenfranchised because of their own behavior or because of discrimination based on race, mental illness, substance abuse, income status, sexual preferences, lifestyles, etc. We The People does this by offering practical support services that our target population tells us that they need: diagnostic and medical services, meals, clothing, social connections, peer and professional substance abuse and mental health counseling and referrals, culturally appropriate HIV/AIDS risk reduction education, referrals to other services, and now a housing and recovery house.

Janet Williams works as a digital video artist and graphic designer in the Philadelphia area.

Cindy Wong has been a production facilitator for other Scribe projects including Face to Face and To the Point.

What's the skinny on black women's health?

Filmmaker's Name:
The Philadelphia Black Women's Health Project
Filmmaker's Bio:

The Philadelphia Black Women's Health Project (PBWHP) was established by African American women from Philadelphia who attended a historic national conference on women's health held in the early 1980s. PBWHP was known by residents, service providers, community groups and clergy for its health promotion activities for African American women and teens in Philadelphia. Unfortunately, the organization became defunct in 2004, but the national umbrella organization, recently renamed the Black Women's Health Imperative, still offers considerable resources in Philadelphia.

Philadelphia-based independent producer Nadine Patterson has been making independent film/video for the past twenty years. She has produced and directed programs for the School District of Philadelphia's cable station, and WYBE Public Television. She earned her MA in Filmmaking at the London Film School. Previous work includes Shizue, a Scribe Video production that was screened at the Museum of Modern Art, NY; and Moving with the Dreaming, winner of a Prized Pieces Award from the National Black Programming Consortium. A recipient of a Media Arts Fellowship from the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts, her award-winning work has often been broadcast on public television.
